Early intervention is at the heart of draft guidance published last week by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
Focusing on how better co-ordinated local and strategic early years services are crucial in the support of families and children during their early years, the draft guidance, out for consultation between 20 April and 18 June 2012, covers early education, home visiting and childcare.
The interventions covered in the guidance “are among the most cost-effective ways of addressing the inequalities in health and life chances that exist between disadvantaged children and those living in better-off families”, says NICE.
Anyone responsible for ensuring the emotional and social well-being of children under five will be interested in the guidance according to NICE. This includes those responsible for the planning and commissioning of children’s services in local authorities, children’s centre staff, childminders, nursery nurses, health visitors, midwives, general practitioners, paediatricians, child and adolescent mental health practitioners, teachers and social workers.
